15 Signs You Are the "Mom" Roommate

By Amanda Olavarria on June 26, 2017

Some people tend to take on a more nurturing role in comparison to others. We all know that one person who is always prepared, whether it be with a bag full of essentials or a good dose of advice when necessary. This person has a maturity beyond their years and we usually deem that this person has mom-like qualities.

When it comes to roommates, we probably all have had an experience with a mom-like roommate; if not it is likely you are the “mom” one. Here are 15 signs that you are in fact the “mom” roommate.

1. You are neat

You love everything clean and tidy, so you always ensure your side is squeaky clean and when your roommate’s side is less than that,  you are sure to call her on it. You have a strong desire to keep everything organized because keeping a pristine environment is of great importance to you.

2. You give a lot of advice

Your roommate often comes to you for advice on how to handle a certain situation and you are always there to tell her the best way to handle it. You always want to steer her in the right direction and ensure that she is doing the right thing in each circumstance. You are always there to listen and provide feedback when necessary.

3. You know when to tell it like it is

Since you are always willing to give your roommate advice, this means you are not too shy to tell it like it is. You are not afraid to be honest and upfront with her when needed. Sometimes honesty is just the best policy.

4. You always check in with your roommate

You text your roommate when she is not in the room to find out where she is and just to make sure she is okay. You like to keep tabs on where your roommate is at all times, especially when it is late in the day. You feel the need to watch out for her and ensure her safety.

5. You have no problem giving people rides

If there is a party going on or your roommate just needs to go somewhere you are more than happy to provide a ride. You are usually the one who does the driving when you go out and usually have to fulfill the role of the sober driver.

6. You keep your roommate on task

You help motivate your roommate to get to work when she is slacking off. You give your roommate that push she needs to stop procrastinating and get to work. You do what you can to keep your roommate on track and away from Netflix.

7.  You always have a variety of medicine at your disposal

Whenever your roommate has a cold or fever, you have just what they need to feel better. You have a whole supply of medicine ready whenever needed.

8. You cheer your roommate up

When your roommate is feeling down you are always there to make her feel better, whether it’s by giving her that hug she needs or listening to her rants when she needs to blow off some steam. You are always the person looking to cheer your roommate up in any way she needs.

9. You do not judge

Whether your roommate comes to you with a tricky situation or she did something that she regrets, you are always there to listen and provide advice without judgment. She can always count on you to be there for her without making her feel bad.

10. You encourage your roommate

You are always there to encourage your roommate. Whether it’s to tell them good luck on an exam or to give them some inspiration when they feel like giving up, your words of encouragement make your roommate’s conflicts a lot smaller.

11. You are constantly reminding your roommate of things

You are there to remind your roommate when there is a meeting with the RA or an event on campus. You also ensure your roommate does not forget necessities like her ID and keys before leaving.

12. You give her advice on her outfit

You are quick to let your roommate know how you feel about what she is wearing. You tell her like it is, especially if her dress is too short. You help her decide what to wear and ensure it looks great on her.

13. You get your roommate through her mental breakdowns

You remind her that everything is going to be okay and you can talk her down even when she is completely overwhelmed. You are able to get her to relax and help her through moments in which she is completely stressed.

14. You help your roommate get over a bad grade

No one feels good when they do poorly on a test or assignment, but you are always there to remind your roommate that one bad grade is not a big deal. You are able to make your roommate feel better and convince her she will do better next time.

15. You love your roommate even when you fight

Much like any mother-daughter relationship, no matter how many times you two fight you are always willing to forgive. No matter how stressed she may make you at times, you still will always look out for her and keep her best interest at heart.
