Week 10 College Football Preview And Predictions

By Camden Joiner on November 2, 2014

This weekend’s college football slate is packed with rivalry games that could potentially have a great impact on what teams earn a spot in this
year’s College Football Playoff.

One loss could doom even a top tier team’s season in the very competitive NCAA ranks. College football fans should keep their schedules open on Saturday because there just happens to be thrilling games on from noon until midnight. Christmas has come early.

Arkansas vs Mississippi State

While on the outside this appears to be the No.1 ranked team in the nation versus a squad currently sitting at .500, don’t be fooled.

The Razorbacks indeed have four losses, but all have come to top ranked SEC programs (Auburn, Texas A&M, Alabama and Georgia). Arkansas nearly defeated the Crimson Tide just a few weeks ago, but eventually would lose by just a point 14-13.

Starting quarterback and Heisman hopeful Dak Prescott has the Mississippi State Bulldogs in top form and it certainly won’t be easy for the Razorbacks to get a win in Starkville.

But as we’ve come to learn, no game in the SEC West can be overlooked this season and I think this one in particular will be a lot closer than most think.

Prediction: Mississippi State

Auburn vs Ole Miss

Perhaps the most important match-up of the weekend is the Ole Miss-Auburn showdown. Auburn and Ole Miss are ranked No. 3 and No. 4 respectively in the nation, but the team that loses this match-up is surely out of the running for the College Football Playoff.

Each team has already suffered a loss, Auburn to Mississippi State and Ole Miss to LSU, so both teams have everything to prove.

Bo Wallace and Nick Marshall are similar in their potential showstopping ability yet unfortunate inconsistency and I believe it will come down to which QB can will their team to a victory.

Prediction: Auburn

Stanford vs Oregon

Marcus Mariota has famously never beaten the Stanford Cardinal as a starter under center. However, this season Stanford sits at just 5-3 while Mariota’s 6-1 Oregon Ducks are the 5th ranked team in the nation.

Oregon has a favorable edge scoring home field advantage in this season’s match-up and it certainly shouldn’t be as competitive as this game has been in previous years.

Albeit, these college players consistently show up for their school’s rivalry games and the Cardinal absolutely should not be counted out. However, I think Oregon’s fans and Mariota’s drive lead them to a victory.

TCU vs West Virginia

Riding a four game winning streak, West Virginia looks to protect home field this week when they take on the TCU Horned Frogs.

Clint Trickett has steadily improved throughout the season and will need to come up big so as to keep up with Trevone Boykin and the electric TCU offense.

The Horned Frogs have only lost one game this season in a shootout with Baylor and have talent on both sides of the ball. The Horned Frogs still have a shot at a spot in the College Football Playoff but on the road in West Virginia will be no easy obstacle.

I expect big games from both Clint Trickett and Trevone Boykin.

Georgia vs Florida

“The World’s Largest Cocktail Party” is one of the biggest events of the year in the deep south, highlighted by the main event showdown of UGA vs UF.

This series has certainly had more significant encounters in the past but much like Oregon vs Stanford, it certainly won’t come easy to either team. Georgia will be without star running back Todd Gurley yet again, but the Florida Gators have been nothing if not pitiful all season.

The Gators are currently sitting at 3-3 and their head coach Will Muschamp seems to be on his way out the door. UF quarterback Jeff Driskel will be benched in favor of Treon Harris for the game, however I don’t believe that will be enough for the Gators to provide a fluent offensive system against an improving UGA defense.

UGA RB Nick Chubb will have a big game behind his powerful offensive line and the Dawgs should get a painless victory in Jacksonville.

Prediction: Georgia

Arizona vs UCLA

Although perhaps taking a backseat to the other PAC-12 showdown between Oregon and Stanford this week, Arizona versus UCLA might have bigger PAC-12 implications.

Arizona is currently the 12th ranked team in the nation even adding a win against the Oregon Ducks to their resume, much to the surprise of most college football followers.

UCLA has underachieved so far this year yet still ranks in at No. 22 mostly due to their offensive weapon under center, Brett Hundley.

Head coach Rich Rodriguez has the Wildcats in the best shape since their Nick Foles days and I don’t believe Brett Hundley will have enough in the tank to knock off one of the best surprises this year in the PAC-12.

Prediction: Arizona
